Our Boston Victorian Entry at Christmas Time

The entry in our Queen Anne Victorian really lends itself to Christmas time, especially with the fireplace going. You can see this room during the rest of the year here. However, it’s often the first place we transform for the holiday season (it’s the site of our annual Ghost and Pumpkin photo shoot, too!).

Transforming the Mantle

For the holiday season, we like to change out our art to something more seasonal. There are so many beautiful pieces that you’re able to download for free from the public domain. Most major museums offer something like this on their website. However, The Public Domain Print Shop is our favorite place to find unique prints. She curates collections from the very large public domain across museum pages. Below are some of our favorites from her Winter Collection. On her site, she explains what the public domain is, and the best way to download and print the art. We like to spread some Mod Podge on top of the print with a foam brush so it gets a more worn and realistic texture. You can read the full tutorial here!

In terms of other mantle details, we add a few candlesticks with our favorite, Root Candles, in a seasonal color. This year, we went with Garnet. We also love this small reindeer figure. At the base of the mantle, we use a little cluster of lanterns at different heights. We get all the candles going in the afternoon, so that there’s cozy, ambient lighting on these shorter days.

In terms of greenery, we are obsessed with the incredible, live wreaths from Rejuvenation. It’s amazing that they’re real, but can be stored and brought out year and year! When you’re opening the Christmas decorations, and you get that fresh smell - it immediately gets you in the decorating mood. Ours is unfortunately no longer available, but this one is very close and there are many other varieties, too. Similarly, we love our garland from Pottery Barn, but our exact one is not available. However, this greenery garland is very close to ours and you can’t go wrong with PB garland! For the final layer, we add a novelty garland of brass bells (here’s a look-a-like of ours) and some hanging bells at the end of the mantle for a little more volume!

Our Tree

We bought this tree two years ago now at Michaels for a great price! We wouldn’t say it’s the most realistic faux-tree, but it’s great for a small tree option and we’ve been pleased with it. When you have more than one Christmas tree in the house, it’s fun to decorate with different styles. We added fun tassel ornaments on this tree in our entry (plus there are tons of color options for these).

Our tree all done up last year … before Holly ate all the popcorn and oranges!
